I grew up in a n outdoor life with a lot of adventures , one was what led me to prison for burglary/theft and battery. I have 4 years left out of 7 years. My life has not stopped because I am here. I keep a strong body and soul as well as mind by working out, reading many different books and taking time to find a meaning in this changing world. I have two tattoos that mark who I am , one a tribal cross on my left arm, the other one the super man symbol with my birth signs. I am using these tattoos and more to come, to mark what means the most in life. Music is the same for me . I am learning to play the guitar. Penpalling Tips for those who are considering writing prisoners from those who have been writing inmates for at least 5 years

A note of caution: We feel that children under the age of 18 should not write prisoners unless they specifically know the person.

Below is a list of ideas for those who want to learn from other’s mistakes. Do not let it scare you off because the rewards from writing men and women in our prisons far outweigh the woes. Those of us who have become close to some inmates and their families have been on a journey of discovery and our lives have been greatly enriched.

When one of us encounters difficulties with a prisoner, we often team up in working with an inmate- give each other support. On the other hand, one of the reasons we are so committed to this work are the wonderful friends we have made in the inmates. Prison breaks many people but it also forces many people to evolve into incredible human beings. Many inmate have a focus and outlook that is unavailable among we over stimulated “free” people.

Here is advise on how to begin from one of our members:
Please forget any preconceptions or stereotypes you may have heard of people in prison. In your first letter, explain a little about yourself why you are writing, and ask if the person would like writing to you. Introduce yourself, describe yourself and the concern that leads you to write. Feel free to ask about prison life, about the persons interests, where they are from, whether they have any appeals in progress etc. It's good to ask questions, because it gives the person something to respond to, but do not ask to many at once-especially in the first letter. Let trust grow between you, and always try to share as much about yourself as you ask the other person to share.

If you feel you only will be able to write, for example, monthly, make this clear to the person. It is important not to promise things that you will not be able to follow through on. If you want to send things like books, stamps, stationary, or food, ask first whether the person wants them, whether they will be able to enter prison and how they will need to be sent.

The person may ask you to send money- if you feel good about that, ask in which way you could send it. NEVER feel obliged to respond to a request for money, again, be sure to find out first in what form it must be sent. You may want to send the person a money order yourself, but ask beforehand if it is appreciated, it may be that the money goes onto an amount of debts, and the inmate would have wanted to receive a magazine subscription or so instead.

You may want to visit this person in addition to writing. That would be great!! just ask him or her whether they want you to visit and what the hours and restrictions are concerning visits. He waill send you a form to fill out giving you permission to visit.

Most prisons do not allow letters with no senders name and address. It is possible to use false ones, but bear in mind the prisoner may reply, so use an address you can receive mail from. If you want to use the FFUP-Postbox, please ask us beforehand, so that we know your return address! Be sure both your return and to address are legible. Always print your name and address neatly on the envelope and include it again in the body of the letter in case something happens to the envelope. Put your pen pals last name and correctional ID number on each sheet of paper or the back of any photos that you enclose - this insures that pages won't get lost when the mail is opened.

Do not put off if you do not receive a reply straight away, prisoners are sometimes limited to how many letters they can write each week. One thing more to remember: all mail to prisoners will be opened and censored, so don't write anything that could jeopardize future actions or someone's freedom.

A few more tips:
1) State your intentions in the first letter. Be clear about why you are writing the inmate. If you set the tone now, you can avoid misunderstandings later. Many male inmates will ask the woman writer for a romantic relationship- they are starved for the feminine. In this case, I often tell the inmate to think of me as a sister, mother or aunt. There are, however, many women who do have romantic relationships with inmates, so that is a choice also. FFUP is always available also to give our views on specific inmates as we know many of the people on our lists. Use our email or Postoffice Box. Forum for Understanding Prisons at yahoo.com (FFUP).

2) The great majority of the people we write are delighted with a short note once in a while, while others will reveal more about themselves will allow the relationship to become deeper. Later you may be asked for money for canteen etc or be given other requests. They may ask you to make copies for them or do hunting on the internet. You can say you just want to be friends and will not be giving them money, etc. Do not do anything you have any doubts about and feel free to email us for advise or call the prison to ask for clarification of rules if you have doubts about the appropriatemness of a request. All the way along in this relationship, remember you are in control over what you agree to do.

3) Usually the inmate will freely talk about the reason for his or her incarceration. Most of us wait until the relationship is established before we ask, but it is often our hesitancy, not theirs. If you want to check the criminal background of any of these people- here are some sites:

These men are in the newly opened general population at WSPF ( formerly Boscobel Supermax)

Most of these Prisoners volunteered to come here and try to make a controversial experiment at what was once the Boscobel Supermax a success. There is now a 100 bed general population unit within the Boscobel prison. Please write these men and help them adjust to these unique conditions.
note:Also included here are a few young men newly arrived to do "hole time".Their seg time will be noted. WSPF is now used by the WIDOC for prisoners doing regular segregation time, where they are punished for breaking rules. They will be returning to general population. This is called the "step program."

By day I'm a prisoner, locked away in time,
caged here like an animal, repenting for my crime.
But when the sun has ran it's course, and day turns into night,
I close my eyes and drift away, as my spirit takes to flight.

I am an African American man from Chicago. I was in this state for less than thirty days in total before I found myself in the middle of a criminal case. I was convicted of PTAC 1st degree homicide seven years ago and sentenced to life, and I've been here every since. I have no family in this state, and everyone I can entertain calling a friend here, I met in prison, it's been a rough run, but by grace I'm making it.

If there was only a few things I would want someone to know, the first would be that I'm a Christian. I guess the next would be that I am not defined by where I am. Yes I made a few bad choices, but fortunately I've learned something from each experience. I only hope that people won't charge my wrongs to my heart. Finally, in spite of my current situation, I still have a lot to offer people if they are willing to see and accept me, rather than drawing a conclusion about me based on the circumstance I'm in right now. Anything outside of those things are more style than substance.

This entire ordeal is odd to me, because I've never been one to write to strangers, but I'm at a point where I could really use some help. Even if you are unable to help me, thank you so very much for taking the time to read my thoughts. May God continue to bless and keep you always.

If you only know this place is an insane asylum an I don’t get to go outside to rec, and enjoy these beautiful days we have been having- but if you ever been to a pet shelter and you see them animals n them cages, that’s how it is in the hole, they got us confined to a cage with no window-so I don’t go out at all. And in your letter you asked me what property I’m allowed. Now it all depends on what kind of property. I know you are allowed to have a tv, radio, fan , typewriter , clothes and shoes if you have that in your property then yes that’s what you we’re allowed. Now if your talking about stuff like this-newspapers, pictures, newsletters, etc- yeah, we can have all that too.
well, I get out of the hole at the end of this year and go back to general population, pending population bed space availability they said to me, but it’s all good cause I’m mentally strong but at times it’s hard too.

N-E- Way, I'm 5ft. 10£ inches tall, weigh 208 pounds. I'm very healthy, I'm brown skin, more like butter pecan, I usually have short wavy hair cut into a fade, but being in solitary confinement, I'm letting my hair dread up to see how it would look. I'm usually a clean cut type of guy, but lately I look like a Taliban member. (SMILE) Still handsome man if I must say so. (SMILE) I also have a sarcastic sense of humor, I talk trash in the sense of quick wit and just being flip and sarcastic... I enjoy many things, I play all sports, but golf. I only like golf when Tiger Woods is playing.

I play chess, I love to read, I love to write, I'm a so-so half ass poet. I enjoy exercising, I meditate a lot because I'm a claustrophobic, so it takes all my will power not to go crazy in this hell hole. I love music, basically love songs and R&B. I’m a romantic type of guy. I love to have fun, but it takes a minute for me to act stupid.

I must feel comfortable with a person before I let the kid in me out. Which brings me to say, I am 40 years old. I will be 41 in January on the 29th, yet I look like I'm 30, and feel like I'm 20... I'm also a serious individual, I take things as they are, accept people as they are. I deal with reality and common sense, if you are right, whether I like it or not, or agree or not, you are right. I can admit when I'm wrong. I am very very secure in myself, I'm my own man, i'M basically a loner, which is based on people betraying me and taking me for granted. I'm not easily impressed, I feel very deeply things, especially friendships and/or relationships.

What a person gives me, I give double back, whether it is good or bad. I treat a person like I want to be treated. If you don't like something someone does to you, then don't do it to them. For instance, I love and respect women, I don't hit women, I don't hit kids, but if they hit me I hit back... Don't get me wrong, let me give you an example; once I was involved with a woman, her previous relationship her husband use to abuse her physically. So one day on a couple of occasions, while we were interacting in conversation, I made her laugh and she had the tendency to smack me on my leg very hard saying "Oh you so funny or crazy". Now the smack was nothing, but it does tend to sting, and I do not enjoy being smacked. So I told her, stop doing that, which she ignores, so one time she smacked my leg, I smacked her on her back and said, "Oh you are a trip". She got mad and told me that I knew how she felt about being hit, that I was mean. I told her that I did that to show that she does not like it, well neither do I; She never hit me again... So you see, sometimes when you return or treat a person the same way, they'll get the message better than just telling them.

As you can see, I like to express myself, I just like for a person to understand me and where I'm coming from, and I'm a man who expresses his feelings. Communication is the key, yet I'm not a talkative person. I can hold my own, but I don't talk to just talk. Many people love to hear the sound of their voice, I can't stand those types especially the know it all's and whiners... N-E- Way, I'm interested in anyone who is interested in writing me. I enjoy funny people who enjoy life, yet are laid back. Race is not a factor, I'm like Rodney King when he said, "Can't we all just get along". (SMILE) For an intro letter this is pretty long, normally I see guys write a half page, I could never do that, what can you say in a half a page?

To share a little bit about myself. I started down the Red Road, back in the late 1980s. Prior to that I had always been heavily involved in the Episcopal Church. But I never learned how to live in harmony within the Web of Life. It is sad to say I had an "us vs. them" attitude about everything. In fact I was working as the chaplain's clerk at the Maryland Penitentiary in 88, when a friend asked me to help him get a Native American Religious Group started. I did all the paper work and after a 6-month plus battle with DOC, he finally got approval. I was invited to the service, and found it interesting. About a month after that they got in a Medicine Man and Sun Dancer, Grandfather Henry Niese. Now I learned about the Sacred Pipe and Mitakuye Oyasin. Grandfather follows and teaches a Lakota spiritual way. He has also written a book that was published about 6 or 7 years ago. Since that lesson was driven home to me with a 2 by 4 so to speak, I have been faithful to following this way of liFe. Mitakuye Oyasin.

In 1996 I became the Pipe Keeper for the Redstone Buffalo Society at MCI-J, and Grandfather Henry gave me my own Sacred Working Pipe two years later.

In January 2002 I was transferred to RCI, up here in Hagerstown. About that time DOC outlawed tobacco within their prison system, but we could keep our Pipes and still use tobacco, but only in the Pipe Ceremony. About 2 years later RCI made us send home all of our Personal Sacred Pipes, I cried when I had to send mine out, it was like loosing a child. In fact it still bothers me today.

Two years ago our 'Rainbow Hoop' split up and we now have two groups with the other being a Lakota (Redstone Society). Grandfather Henry gave us a wonderful "T" Sacred Pipe and it is a blessing. It never wants to go out. © This past fall when our Pipe Carrier went home, the Pipe was passed on to me to care for it.

I don't know what it is like up in your woods, but over here on the East Coast it is either really cold in the high 20s, that is cold for us, but when ever it rains we seem to get it in the mid 30s or 40s. So even though we have had a lot of rain around here and the grass is a lush green even though it isn't growing we have had NO snow.

Since I don't have to shovel it or drive in it, I miss it. This week is a good example, for 5 days it was 32 or below with a good Northwest wind blowing, today we will get about an inch of rain, been raining steadily since o'dark hundred this morning, and it is 34° outside. The local news claims that it will stop raining late this afternoon, and then it will get down to freezing again. I want my snow.

What we did for the Winter Solstice and Christmas in here was sew Popcorn on a thread and then string it on a Cedar Tree by the chapel on the Winter Solstice (Dec. 22), as a gift for the winged ones. I have sock with Al, my cell buddy, and my names on it and they siie nung from the bedposts. As the days marched on I keep adding things to his, small packs of cookies, hard candy, Debbie's, oranges, etc.). I also made a chocker for Two Dog and did some bead work for the other brothers.

Since I work as the Housing Unit Clerk, I have access to a computer (Dell with Window's 2000) and a HP laser jet printer (no color) and the only thing my computer is hooked to, is my desk and the electrical plug. In other words no Internet access or e-mails. I do have 4 card games (FreeCell, Spider, Solitaire, & Harts) and Pinball. I play the first 2 card games all the time.

I have been incarcerated since I was 15 years old and I am now 31 and I am currently serving the longest sentence in WI history given to a juvenile for a robbery offense. Even thou I was suppose to only get 26 years "old law" (parole in 6 ½ years), I was sentenced to 70 years "old law" (parole in 171/2). I was given this sentence based on clearly false evidence, and basically because the judge had a bad day because no specific reason was ever given. Making you all sorts of promises, but you know that they're lying!

you knew, but suddenly their plans change, and of course they don't include you.

when you are in need of canteen, they aren't there.

It's really messed up doing time when your loved ones are acting blind; but hey, that's jail life. "Out of sight, out of mind'. Have you ever felt curious to know something or someone that has caught your attention? It's amazing how many people don't believe that it's a supreme being, but never with all their wealth tried to contact him. They'll use minds to regress into past lives, explore this life, even predict future lotto numbers, but not contact God.

It's been done elsewhere in the world, from the beginning of time, but that's all for that. As I'm in a California Prison until 2020, December, and have been abandoned by family and friends, (who divided the $80 Million), and left me penniless, and in bad health, but mentally aware.

To keep my mind from rotting away in the next 12 years, I'll need stimuli, as in letters,from new friends. Let us see what help I can be to you. Can't find love? I can advise, Want adventure? Hello, my name is Marteze but everyone calls me Teze. I am 36. ( Nov 10th), 6’2”, 235 lbs solid ; dark chocolate complexioned, African American male. First of Series of Essay

For 13 yrs. my very existence has been one of turmoil. No one could ever imagine that one day at the age of 23 they would receive a 60 year prison sentence. This brief story isn't one of self pity, nor public pity, but of sharing a small part of my life, in hopes that someone may learn from my mistakes. I was by no means a saint before Sept. 21, 1995, but before that day, I truly believed that I strove to live a decent life. I worked, went to college, and was a believer of striving towards the will of God, and of the ultimate and unconditional love of my Mama.

September 21, 1995, my beloved Mama passed away from Cancer at the age of 40. No child, parent, or loved one should ever have to watch someone they love die such a horrible death. Especially when you are clueless to the effects it will have on you, but then how do you prepare for death?

My life fell apart! I was such a Mama's boy; Oh, but in the streets, I had a thugs personality, but around my Mama, I was the biggest baby. My Mama was my best friend, and the only person I knew who truly loved me unconditionally. I woke up the day after she passed, so alone and afraid, and not knowing what the future held in store for me.

Can you imagine waking up in a world full of people and knowing that not one person loves you, or would mourn your death? Well I started drinking and using drugs, and 3 months after my Mama passed, I was sentenced to 60 yrs. in prison.

I wont go into all my struggles I've had in these 13 yrs., but it's been rough and trying, and it all adds up to; "I'm still here!" God has brought me from the depths of hell and back. When I no longer believed in Him, He never gave up on me. How blessed am I? For me, the lesson I've learned, was no matter how bad things get, never give up on yourself. God has a plan for us, and God never gives us more than we can handle.

It took prison to save my life, but for you, let it be prayer and your belief in God, or if not that, then the belief that if you hold your head high and stay focused there is a brighter day ahead. It might not seem so at that moment, but I promise you if you trust yourself, and believe in yourself, then it will get better. Prison life is hard, we're treated like property, and less than human. Prisoners are abused, subjected to all kinds of inhumane treatment, and for some, they find solace in medication. For others like myself, we find strength from within.

I have no family or friends, but for those who do, love your family member or friend locked down, they need you in their darkest hours. Yes, we've made mistakes but we're still human beings with the same emotions as anyone else. Please don't give up on us, we need you, your love and support. Blood of a Slave, Hart of a King

Have you ever seeing those dogs that people use 4 dog fights? After they’ve been subjected to extreme harsh conditions like being locked up in a “ cage” 4 months at a time or even years without the proper med treatment of water or even just allowing treats , to act like “normal dogs?”
Well, that’s exactly what I feel like today. I feel like a damn animal that’s been locked up in a cage too long.
Even the “outside light” which we barely see unless we’re taken out to those other “bigger cages” and we climb upI a wall, hurt my eyes to look at when I seen” Damn now I know what my two pitbulls felt that I used to keep locked up in the basement most of the time while I lived the fast life on Chicago’s South Side streets.
I remember how sometimes in the afternoons as the sun was going down I used to take my dog s out on runs with heavy chains rapped around their necks and I used to “punch” them or “kick” them hard on their small solid little bodies every time they would either slow down or they would start to show any type of “normal or human “ emotions. It’s like I use to get off watching them act mean or ugly.
Well , like they say, Karma iz a bitch when it catches up with us and even doe I never used my dogs 4 –fighting, only for “protection”, I still feel like I deserve the very thing that I’ve gotten this past 8 years that I’ve been locked down in a cage suffering day and night 4 a crime that I didn’t commit just like those two beautiful dogs did every time that I hurt them .
But you know what? Maybe, just maybe if god’s mercy can endure and he ca forgive me 4 all the wrong that I’ve done maybe god will allow the truth to cum out someday before I lose my soul behind these walls.
“A saint I’m not but sinner who keeps on trying”. Those were the words of Nelson Mandela, a “political prisoner” just like me. Please write US Atty Mario Gonzalez from Milwaukee WI and tell him to stop protecting Alfredo Montenez AKA Shorty and Hugo Deportillo , the two men who killed Gabriel Peyez, the victim in my case.
I’m willing to pay for my mistakes and admit my wrong, but I don’t deserve to be doing time 4-a crime I didn’t commit. I’m not a killer. I was only s “lost sheep” trying to find a home out on the streets. Now I’m a soldier4- God trying to do the right thing.

PSS After I was arrested down in Chicago and brought back to WI one day, while I was on the phone with my people down there, they told me how “Prieta”, my female pitbull and “Oso” my male pitbull had both become “excellent companions”. They said that at first both of them really struggled being out of their “cages”all the time and running around the yard FREE.

Feel My Pain
My body in a cage like the daylight raining down,
each pore crying the change of light show's I'm in prison.
I have been walking my cage all night to this pain.
Destructive I feel, living here and if I could instruct myself,
if I could learn to stop the pain, even as it grasps me,
